Welcome to fatherhood hang on, and enjoy the experience of a lifetime!
Don't be Afraid
Some new dads are apprehensive about interacting with baby, and that's perfectly normal. But don't worryif you're patient, trust your instincts, and keep your sense of humor, you'll be amazed at how easy (and fun) your new responsibilities can be.
Dad's Top Ten List:
- Parenthood is a 50-50 job. Don't ever forget it.
- Bond with your baby. Hold him every chance you get. Snuggle her close, look into her eyes and sing a lullaby. Tell baby that he is loved. Say it 100 times a day.
- Tell baby's mom that she is loved. Say it 100 times a day. And show it.
- Take time off work. While Mom's recovering from the birth, you can change diapers, soothe a fussy baby, vacuum, feed the pets, do the laundry, etc., etc., etc.
- Stay calm. Parenthood can bring tense moments, but panicking has never helped.
- Sleep. Make sure you get enough, and that Mom does, too.
- Learn helpful skills. Like burping the baby and identifying "I'm hungry" vs. "I'm wet."
- Don't argue with baby's mom. And don't call your mother for confirmation. Let the little things go.
- Order in. Pizza tastes even better by candlelight.
- Take a break. Scrap the housework and head for the park, instead.
