Technology Advancements for Excellence

Cutting edge technology is crucial for St. Luke’s most vulnerable patients - the critically ill babies cared for on the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU):

  • The NICU provides care to 1,000 babies each year
  • More than 6,000 babies are born at St. Luke’s Boise and Meridian each year

Can you imagine a baby so tiny it easily fits in your hand? The ability to treat infants born as early as four months premature and weighing as little as one pound, or infants born at full term but critically ill, is testimony to the skills of St. Luke’s physicians and staff, combined with the latest technology and medical advances.

Giraffe Beds have revolutionized care for fragile infants.  A Giraffe Bed creates an optimal environment that is temperature and humidity controlled, blocks outside light and sound that can impair development, rotates 360 degrees to minimize harmful movement, and provides a setting where surgery can be conducted if necessary.

  • On average, St. Luke’s NICU cares for 45 babies each day

St. Luke’s currently has three Giraffe Beds, far fewer than needed. The Technology Advancements for Excellence project will provide for eight new Giraffe Beds to ensure that this life-saving technology is available to all babies who require it.

The Technology Advancements for Excellence project will also enhance the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Emergency Room, and other pediatric areas. The latest technology allows our experienced staff to better care for children in the most comfortable environment possible. These upgrades will compliment St. Luke’s existing commitment to comprehensive and compassionate care.
